The decision made before planting
Most of a tree's chance of survival is decided at the nursery, before anyone digs a hole.
Root quality, stock type, and size at planting matter more than almost anything done afterwards. A tree with a spiralled, congested root system will underperform for its whole life regardless of how well it is planted and watered.
Nurseries are not selling you a tree. They are selling you a root system with a tree attached.
The stock types
Bare-root. Lifted from the field during dormancy, roots washed or shaken free of soil, sold as whips or transplants. The cheapest by a wide margin, often a fifth to a tenth the cost of the equivalent containerised tree.
Roots grow naturally outward with no spiralling. Light and easy to handle, so a person can carry hundreds. Establishes faster than container stock in most trials because roots are in direct contact with site soil from day one.
The constraints: available only in the dormant season, and the roots must never dry out. Twenty minutes of wind on exposed roots can kill a batch. Heel them into moist soil the moment they arrive.
Cell-grown or plug. Raised in small modules, sold with an intact root plug. Longer planting season, light, and good survival. Modern cells are designed with vertical ribs and open bases so roots are air-pruned rather than deflected into a spiral.
Containerised. Grown in pots. Plantable in any season, immediate visual effect, and by far the most expensive. The dominant format in the ornamental trade and the source of most root defects.
Rootballed. Field-grown, lifted with a soil ball wrapped in hessian. Used for large specimens. Heavy, expensive, and requires machinery.
Smaller stock usually wins
The persistent and counterintuitive finding across establishment trials: smaller trees establish faster, suffer less transplant shock, and frequently overtake larger stock planted at the same time within five to ten years.
A large tree has lost a much greater proportion of its root system relative to the canopy it must supply. It spends years in deficit, barely growing, sometimes declining. Meanwhile a whip planted alongside it has rebuilt a proportionate root system and is growing freely.
Large stock also needs staking, needs far more water, costs many times more, and dies more often.
Plant large stock when you need immediate presence for social or design reasons, in a prominent urban site or where vandalism risk means a small tree will not survive. Root defects that condemn a tree
Inspect the roots. If a supplier will not let you, buy elsewhere.
Circling roots. Roots that hit the pot wall and turn, spiralling around the rootball. They keep circling after planting. Twenty years on they thicken and strangle the trunk, and the tree fails at the base, often in wind, often with no warning.
Girdling roots. A circling root already crossing the stem. Reject outright.
J-rooting. Roots bent upward at the base, from a planting slot that was too small at some earlier stage. Common in cheaply lined-out stock, and it produces unstable trees.
Root-bound plug. A dense mat of root with no soil visible. Has been in the container too long.
Buried root flare. Extremely common. The flare is often 5 to 15 cm below the container surface. Scrape the top of every rootball you buy and find where the first structural roots emerge. That, not the pot surface, is the planting depth.
Dead or blackened roots. Root rot, often Phytophthora, and it comes home with the tree. See tree diseases.
For circling on stock you have already bought, be ruthless. Slice four vertical cuts down the rootball and tease the base apart, or shave the outer layer off entirely. Trees recover from this far better than from being left intact.
Provenance
Where the seed came from matters as much as the species.
Local provenance is adapted to local frost dates, day length, and rainfall. The same species from 800 km south may break bud three weeks early and lose the crop to frost every year.
For restoration, provenance is a requirement rather than a preference, and mixed provenance is now the mainstream recommendation as conditions shift. See climate adaptation and seed banking.
Ask for it in writing. Reputable nurseries record seed origin; brokers frequently do not know, and stock is routinely grown in one country from seed collected in another and sold as native.
Biosecurity
The plant trade is how tree diseases move between continents. Ash dieback, Xylella, and numerous Phytophthora species all arrived in nursery consignments.
Prefer bare-root, because container soil is a transport medium for root pathogens.
Buy domestically grown, not merely domestically sold. Trees are commonly grown abroad and finished locally.
Quarantine new stock away from established plantings where practical.
Grow your own where you can. Local seed collection, propagation, and grafting bypass the supply chain entirely and give you provenance control.
Handling
Most damage happens between the nursery and the hole.
Never let bare roots see sun or wind. Keep them bagged and damp, heel them into soil if planting is delayed more than a day or two.
Never lift a tree by the stem. Carry the rootball.
Never let a container dry out before planting. A dry rootball is hydrophobic and will shed water for weeks after planting; soak it thoroughly first if it has dried.
Plant in the dormant season for bare-root, ideally autumn into moist warm soil so roots begin before the first summer. See seasonal planning.
Ordering ahead
Good stock, in the species and provenance you want, is ordered a year in advance. Nurseries grow to contract.
Turning up in February expecting 500 local-provenance oak whips means taking whatever is left, which is how projects end up with the wrong species from the wrong origin.
For anything at scale, talk to the nursery the season before, and consider contract growing from seed you collect yourself.
