Trained to Do the Opposite

Peter Wohlleben was born in 1964 in Bonn, Germany. He decided as a child that he wanted to work with forests, studied forestry, and joined the state forestry service of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1987.

The job was not what he expected. State forestry in Germany at the time was an industrial operation concerned with timber volume: even-aged stands, heavy machinery, clearfelling, herbicides, and the planting of commercially convenient conifers on ground that would naturally have carried beech.

Wohlleben spent roughly twenty years doing that work and becoming increasingly convinced it was wrong. He watched soil compacted by harvesters, saw stands blow down after thinning, and noticed that the trees he was managing intensively often did worse than the ones left alone.

Hümmel

In 2006 he took over management of the municipal forest at Hümmel, in the Eifel region, and was given latitude to manage it differently. He eventually left the state service to work for the municipality directly.

He removed the machinery, reintroducing horse logging to avoid soil compaction. He stopped clearfelling and moved to selective harvesting under continuous cover. He stopped using pesticides. He allowed a substantial proportion of the forest to develop without intervention, and he left deadwood standing and lying.

The economics were the surprise. The forest became more profitable, not less, once it stopped requiring expensive interventions, replanting, and machinery, and once the timber it produced was higher quality.

He also developed unconventional income: burial forests, where people pay for a tree under which ashes are interred, generating revenue that requires no cutting at all. It is exactly the kind of arrangement described in restoration economics, where a standing forest earns without being felled.

Hümmel became a working demonstration that woodland management by continuous cover is commercially viable, which is the argument that persuades foresters when ecology alone does not.

The Book

In 2015 Wohlleben published Das geheime Leben der Bäume, translated as The Hidden Life of Trees. It became an international bestseller, selling millions of copies in dozens of languages.

The book presents forest ecology in deliberately anthropomorphic terms. Trees are described as communicating, as feeling pain, as nursing their sick, as raising children, as forming friendships with neighbours.

Behind the language is a substantial amount of real science, much of it drawn from work by Suzanne Simard on mycorrhizal networks and from research on plant signalling.

The underlying findings are genuine. Trees release volatile compounds when attacked, and neighbouring trees detect them and raise their chemical defences. Root grafts between individuals occur, and stumps of felled trees are sometimes kept alive for decades by neighbours. Mycorrhizal fungi connect root systems and transfer carbon and nutrients between plants. Beech stands do grow better as connected groups than as isolated individuals.

The Criticism

Wohlleben's popularity among general readers has been matched by irritation among scientists, and the objection is specific rather than snobbish.

The complaint is not that the underlying facts are invented. It is that the anthropomorphic framing attributes intention, emotion, and social motive to processes that are chemical and evolutionary, and that readers come away believing trees have feelings in the way animals do.

Several thousand German-speaking scientists signed a petition objecting to the book's presentation of the science, and reviewers have pointed out that some claims are stated with more confidence than the evidence supports.

Wohlleben's defence is that the anthropomorphism is a communication strategy: that people protect what they feel connected to, and that a scientifically impeccable book nobody reads protects no forests.

Both positions have merit. The book has done more to make ordinary people care about forest ecology than any amount of accurate literature, and it has also seeded a certain amount of misunderstanding that ecologists spend time correcting.

What He Got Right for Practitioners

Setting the framing debate aside, Wohlleben's practical arguments have held up well and align with mainstream forest ecology.

Soil compaction is a serious and under-recognised harm. Heavy machinery damages forest soil for decades, and much of it is invisible from above. See decompaction.

Old trees are disproportionately valuable, ecologically and often commercially, and removing them removes network hubs, habitat, and seed sources. See dead wood habitat.

Trees grown as connected stands outperform isolated ones, which argues against wide-spaced plantation and against removing every competitor around a crop tree.

Natural regeneration usually beats planting where a seed source exists, producing better-adapted trees with undamaged root systems and no nursery costs. See assisted regeneration and nursery stock.

Native broadleaf on suitable ground outperforms exotic conifer plantation over the long run, particularly under drought and storm. German spruce plantations suffered enormous losses in the droughts and bark beetle outbreaks of 2018 onward, which vindicated a great deal of what he had been arguing. The Effect

Wohlleben now runs a forest academy, writes prolifically, and is a prominent public voice in German debates about forest policy, particularly over the fate of spruce plantations dying under drought and beetle attack.

His significance is less about original science than about audience. He took findings that had circulated among researchers for decades and made a very large number of people care about them, then demonstrated on a real municipal forest that managing accordingly makes money.

That combination, a working example plus a persuasive story, has changed more forestry practice than either would alone.
